Mindful Living

A collaboration between The Bothy Project, Gareth Neal and The New Craftsmen. 26th March to 25th April 2015 at The New Craftsmen shop in Mayfair, London.

For Mindful Living The New Craftsmen have invited designer and maker Gareth Neal ‘to present a set of objects that can fulfil his needs both mentally & physically – pieces that engender satisfaction by virtue of their functional, emotional & aesthetic appeal. With provenance & narrative at the heart of the concept, The New Craftsmen are exploring with Gareth what this particular selection means to him and how we can pursue a mindful way of living.’

The selected objects are displayed within the form of a wooden cabin made in collaboration between The Bothy Project and Gareth Neal. Throughout the course of Mindful Living Gareth Neal and Bobby Niven will be looking to develop the design of a new bothy, conceived as a makers shed. As the design has not yet been fully realised, there is the opportunity for the design to be finished collaboratively with a sponsor and tweaked to fit the context of a specific site.

We are currently looking for a sponsor and site to help realise Gareth’s bothy design and install it as a functioning makers shed that can become part of the Bothy Project network of residency spaces.

If you are interested in sponsoring this bothy or know of a great location (perhaps a parkland, rooftop or riverside site in London?) then drop us a line.

To bring to life the Mindful Living bothy Esse, the UK’s longest-standing stove manufacturer, have supplied their classic Ironheart ranger stove. The Ironheart was designed in 2004 to celebrate ESSE’s 150th anniversary. It was inspired by the famous cook stoves used by legendary explorers Shackleton and Smith but with all the modern knowledge we know today. The Ironheart boasts a huge 9.7kW heat output, with an option for a boiler and a distinct glass fronted door allowing the classic view of a roaring hot fire. For those who don’t have wood available as a fuel option, the Ironheart is also available in gas.

From the famous stoves used by the Lady with the Lamp, Florence Nightingale, to Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall and the River Cottage team, ESSE range cookers are renowned for efficiency with classic design. ESSE are proudly 100% British base in the rolling green hills of Pendle, on the Lancashire and Yorkshire border.’
